The extractive industry in Malawi is comprised of mining, forestry, and services related to transportation of natural resources. the country is also promoting oil and gas exploration which is considered as an industry with potential. Currently dominating is the mining and artisanal at small scale rock aggregate, limestone and quarrying. Gemstone and gold prospecting and mining is predominated with small scale mining activities.
Currently, Malawi is expecting a number of large scale mining operations to commence within the next years. the expectation is that five more mining companies will start operating shortly. There is a Niobium project in Mzimba and Kasungu; the reopening of the Uranium mining project in Kayerekera; the new Kasiya Rutile/Graphite mining project; the Kangankhunde rare earth mining prospect in Balaka; the Songwe/Phalombe rare earth project and the Makanjira heavy sand minerals project.
